The driver of a commuter train which crashed into an intercity train close to Amsterdam’s central station last year, killing one person, should face criminal charges, the public prosecution department said on Wednesday.

However, if the driver accepts a sentence of 120 hours community service, she will be spared a court hearing, the department said in a statement.

Almost 200 people were injured in the crash which happened when the driver went through a red light. At the time she was trying to contact the driver of another train to report a defect.

However, Dutch railway firm NS is unhappy with the proposal, saying community service is a serious punishment for what it calls a ‘combination of circumstances’.

According to Nos television, NS is considering taking action against the public prosecutor if the department presses ahead.
