Dutch take fewer holidays

The financial crisis has finally hit the travel industry, with the Dutch taking fewer holidays of all kinds, the national tourism agency NBTC reports.

Between 2008, the year of the financial crash, and 2012, the Dutch went on holiday less and nearer to home. But now the number of these shorter holidays is also dropping, says the NBTC.

Bookings at Dutch hotels and motels are down 13% and camp sites have 12% fewer bookings compared with 2012.

The number of people planning a summer holiday in the country is down 3%, with foreign holidays showing a drop of 5%.
