The warm southwesterly winds blowing over the Netherlands have brought record temperatures with them for the time of year, the KNMI weather bureau said on Wednesday.

The night of Tuesday to Wednesday was the warmest January 30 on record, with a high of 13 Celsius recorded at the De Bilt weather station.

During the days of January 29 and 30, the temperature reached 11.8 and 11.9 Celsius respectively, also new day records, the KNMI said.

The warmest January day ever was 15.1 Celsius, reached on January 13 in 1993.

The strong winds, gusting at up to gale force 8 at times, have led to delays and cancellations at Schiphol airport and passengers are being urged to check with their airline for details. The wind is due to die down in the afternoon.
