The cull of wild geese around Schiphol airport has paid off and the number of instances of geese flying over runways has gone down by 90%, according to the organisation responsible for the cull.

The Schiphol airport authority itself says it is too soon to draw conclusions and only next month will the reality of the new situation become clear.
Reinier van Elderen of the Wildbeheereenheid Haarlemmermeer said some 5,000 geese have been killed in the vicinity of the airport. In addition, farmers have cleared their land of all left-over grain immediately after the harvest and green lasers are also proving a deterrent.
Summer
The goose cull took place this summer after a string of legal procedures and protests.
The government allowed the mass killing because of the risk of collisions between aircraft and flocks of geese. In 2010, a Maroc Air plane was forced to make an emergency landing after geese hit the motor.
Bird protection groups say it would be more humane to grow different crops around the airport to discourage the birds from feeding there.
