Wesley Sneijder is Oranje’s new captain
Coach Louis van Gaal has asked midfielder Wesley Sneijder to captain the Dutch national football team, ahead of Wednesday night’s match against Belgium.
Sneijder, 28, replaces Mark van Bommel who left international football following Oranje’s disastrous performance in this summer’s European championships. The Dutch team failed to win a single point in the group round.
‘We had a group meeting on Monday and I kept a watchful eye open,’ Van Gaal said at a news conference. ‘Then I definitely went for Sneijder.’
Sneijder, who currently turns out for Internazionale, has 87 caps for the Netherlands.
Deputy captain is Dirk Kuijt, who Van Gaal described as ‘an example to every footballer in the Netherlands.’
