Turkish brothers win the annual best raw herring award
The Atlantic fish shop in Leiden, run by two Dutch-Turkish brothers, has won the AD newspaper’s 2012 award for supplying the best new raw herring in the country.
Abdullah and Umut Tagi were the only fishmongers to be given 10 out of 10 for this year’s Hollandse Nieuwe in the annual test.
The brothers, who grew up in a fish trading family, set up their own shop in 1989. ‘We were always known as ‘the Turks’ but I think winning the most important prize there is means we have definitely made it,’ Umut Tagi told the AD. ‘Now I know what the sweet taste of success is.’
The paper says the overall quality of this year’s catch is ‘extremely good’, although only six out of 10 fishmongers scored at least 5.5 out of 10.
