Iraq wants the Netherlands to help support returnee refugees
Iraq has asked the Netherlands to help support rejected asylum seekers financially once they have returned to the Middle Eastern country, Nos television reports on Thursday.
Iraq’s migration minister Shafiq Duski is in the Netherlands to discuss the return of some 1,300 failed asylum seekers with Dutch immigration minister Gerd Leers.
The visit follows protests by a group of Iraqi refugees who are due to be deported. Iraq will only accept voluntary returnees but several hundred Iraqis are refusing to go, saying they will not be safe.
According to Nos, Duski told a meeting with refugees on Thursday morning that he had asked the Netherlands to support returnees financially for six months.
