The Amsterdam metro between central and Amstel stations is unsafe and will remain so until the tunnel and stations are renovated, city council engineers said on Tuesday.

This means the underground system should be closed down until improvement work is carried out, say the city council’s safety and building supervisors following a risk assessment by the Arcadis civil engineering group.
The safety level in this part of the tunnel has not reached that laid down in law for years, reports the Parool. Since 2006, work has been going on spasmodically to improve the situation and Amsterdam council has turned a blind eye to the dangers, the report says.
Building supervisors now say the work is taking too long and it is no longer responsible to keep the metro running.
Eric Wiebes, the council executive in charge of transport, is ignoring their concerns and has no plan to shut down the metro, which transports thousands of commutors a day, says the paper.
