Fifth candidate joins race for party leader job
There was a last minute entry on Tuesday in the race to be the new Labour party leader when MP Lutz Jacobi announced she is a candidate for the post.
The 56-year-old Jacobi, who speaks in parliament on nature, countryside, agriculture and horticulture, fishing, recreation and the Wadden Sea, joins Diederik Samsom, Nebahat Albayrak, Martijn van Dam and Ronald Plasterk on the list of candidates.
They are vying to take over as parlimentary party leader after Job Cohen stepped down last week.
Wadden Sea
Jacobi took her seat as a Labour MP in 2006 and is little known outside parliament. However, she is known in her home province of Friesland for her commitment to the Wadden Sea, and she was named the year’s greenest politician in 2009 by the environmental organisation Natuurmonumenten.
She has thrown her hat into the ring because she thinks her competitors are not talking about involving the whole of the Netherlands in helping the country out of the mess it is currently in.
The list for candidates is now closed. The five candidates will debate with each other at four party meetings and on March 16, Labour party members will cast their votes. The following day the party congress will endorse the result. The parliamentary party has the last word on March 20.
