Truckers go slow in protest at unfair competition
Independent truck drivers from all over the Netherlands plan a go slow on the roads on Monday morning in protest at what they say is unfair competition from eastern European drivers, the NRC reports.
Between 11.00 and 12.00 hours, truckers will drive no faster than 60 kph in an effort to draw attention to their campaign to improve safety standards and introduce a level playing field.
They argue eastern European truckers can get a heavy goods vehicle driving licence within two hours, while Dutch drivers need two years, the NRC says. The Netherlands has up to 10,000 small trucking companies with fewer than 20 drivers.
Truckers in Denmark, Sweden and Norway are also staging a go slow, the paper said.
