The combination of strong westerly gales and high tides has put officials in charge of the Netherlands’ coastal defences on high alert, the Telegraaf said on Friday.

High water warnings have already been given for three of the six coastal regions and some storm gates have been closed.
High water is forecast in five of the six sea coast areas, the paper said. This happens once every two years.
