Time runs out for civil servants who won’t marry gay couples
A majority of MPs backs the introduction of legislation to sack civil servants who refuse to marry gay couples, now the government’s alliance partner PVV has thrown its weight behind the campaign.
The minority cabinet is not in favour of a change in the law. It says every local authority has a registrar who will marry same sex couples so civil servants who have religious objections to gay marriage can refuse to do so.
This exception was worked into the legislation sanctioning same sex weddings when it came into effect 10 years ago.
Christians
According to research by gay rights campaign group COC earlier this year, 58 local councils employ a total 0f 102 registrars who refuse to marry same sex couples. Nearly all are orthodox Christians.
In May, Amsterdam city council said it would reassign two registrars who refuse to carry out gay weddings to other functions.
It is not clear from the media coverage when MPs will introduce any draft legislation to change the current situation.
