Thousands of doctors protest at government cuts

Thousands of doctors are in Amsterdam on Thursday to protest at government plans to cut spending on family doctor services.

Health minister Edith Schippers is cutting €132m this year from the budget for family doctors because they spent too much last year. This is the equivalent of some €20,000 per practice.
Schippers said in a statement it would be unfair to exempt doctors from the claw back, which is also being applied to physiotherapists and other health service sectors. If the cut is not made, the bill will have to be paid by someone else, she said.
Many practices are closed on Thursday because of the protests.
