PVV councillors hire themselves as their own assistants (update)

Two provincial councillors for the PVV in Limburg have hired themselves in as their own party workers, generating an extra salary, news agency ANP reports.

According to the Volkskrant, the two councillors earn €13,000 a year for their work as councillors plus €57,000 a year as party support staff.
Last month it emerged a PVV provincial councillor in Noord-Holland was also doing the same two jobs – a move which the home affairs ministry says ‘is not to be recommended for reasons of integrity’.
Limburg PVV chief Laurence Stassen, who is also a member of the PVV in the European parliament, said the party would not allow dual functions if it was against the law.

The situation is appropriate for young political parties which are building up their position, Stassen said, without explaining further.
However, party leader Geert Wilders let it be known on Tuesday evening he disapproved of the dual role and hoped it would soon be ‘a thing of the past’.
Four PVV MPs still have double roles but at one point as many as 10 of the 26 MPs had two political functions.
The Volkskrant published research earlier this year showing PVV parliamentarians were among the best paid in politics because so many had double salaries.
