MPs from the two governing parties VVD and CDA and the minority ChristenUnie have asked social affairs minister Henk Kamp to come up with a solution for market gardeners faced with a shortage of temporary workers.

Kamp is to stop giving work permits to Romanian and Bulgarian workers, saying the market gardeners should use the local unemployed instead to help with their harvests.
The Netherlands has 500,000 people on social security benefits who can do the work, the minister says.

But the growers say the minister cannot change the rules in the middle of the season, and have threatened to take him to court.
ChristenUnie MP Cynthia Ortega told the Telegraaf if the minister wants native Dutch jobless to do the work, he should make sure the jobs centres make them do so.
In particular, orchard owners in West-Brabant traditionally make use of some 2,000 Romanian seasonal workers. They say it is difficult to find people in the Netherlands who will do the physically heavy and specialised work.
