The board of Amsterdam football club Ajax stepped down during a bizarre members’ meeting on Wednesday night citing ‘continuing unrest’ which is ‘extremely damaging’ to the club.

The resignations follow a campaign by former player and club icon Johan Cruijff, who wants to overhaul the youth section and technical organisation of the club.
General director Rik van den Boog remains in his job.
Cruijff presented his plans for the club to management last week and says not enough notice is being taken of his recommendations.
New team
The resignation of the three-man board – Uri Coronel, Cor van Eijden and Joop Krant – means the members’ council must now find a new management team.
Ajax, the only Dutch football club to be listed on the stock exchange, is currently third in the league and has not won the title since the 2003/04 season.
Coronel told Wednesday night’s meeting the board had no choice. ‘If we did not support him, it would have been a fight, so it was accept the situation or leave,’ he said. ‘Cruijff is a demi-god, or maybe an entire god, here. And that is that.’
