Asylum seekers evicted despite cold

Failed asylum seekers were evicted from refugee centres last week, despite government assurances this would not happen during freezing temperatures, Trouw reports on Wednesday.

Last week immigration minister Gerd Leers told MPs asylum seekers would not be put on the streets if it was very cold. ‘That goes without saying,’ the minister said.
Labour MPs want the government to follow the same severe weather guidelines as apply to the homeless. When temperatures dip below a certain level, local health boards can order everyone who is homeless into shelters. This happened last week in Amsterdam.
