Six juvenile prisons to be shut

Six of the Netherlands’ 17 youth prisons are to be closed temporarily because of overcapacity, junior justice minister Fred Teeven told MPs on Tuesday.

The closure will save €100m a year and lead to 1,100 job losses, the junior minister said in a statement.
The previous cabinet wanted to close three youth prisons but was voted down by parliament, the Telegraaf reports.
Alternative uses
The reduction means there will be 800 jail places for juvenile offenders, down from 1,200 at present.
One prison may now be used to treat youngsters with a slight mental handicap while another may house young asylum seekers.
A shift towards placing youngsters in secure accommodation plus extra emphasis on community service and electronic tagging have led to the surplus of prison places.
