Foreign rose growers pressure Dutch production
Rose growers in warmer countries like Kenya and Ethiopia are pressuring Dutch-grown products, according to new figures from the cut flower board, quoted by website nu.nl.
Last year 3.5 million roses were sold at the Aalsmeer flower auction, compared with 3.2 million10 years ago. But the number of imported roses doubled to 2.4 million while domestic production fell from 1.9 million to 1.1 million, the figures show.
At the same time, the amount of land devoted to rose growing in the Netherlands has gone down by 40% to 532 hectares
