Dutch Iraqi convicted of terrorism says he was forced to make confession
The Dutch Iraqi jailed by a US court for 25 years on terrorism charges says he was forced into making a confession.
In an interview with news agency ANP, Wesam al Delaema says he is not a terrorist and never planned any attacks on US soldiers.
Delaema was released from jail by judges in Rotterdam earlier this week. He had been returned to the Netherlands under a deal worked out with the Dutch authorities.
Isolation
‘I have done nothing but I could not take it any more after spending six months in isolation in jail,’ Delaema told ANP. ‘I found out for myself that prisons like Abu Ghraib in Iraq also exist in the capital of the US… I wanted to die. My only chance to get out was to confess.’
During those six months he was kept in a cell below ground level and did not see daylight, Delaema claims. ‘Almost all the wardens had served as soldiers in Iraq. They told me from the beginning I had no rights,’ he said.
The video footage showing him planting roadside bombs is misleading, he told ANP.
‘I filmed the resistance in Fallujah and showed what they did. I might have acted as if I was one of them but I was not. Yes, I was angry at what the Americans have done in Iraq.
‘Friends of mine have been killed by American bombs. I wanted to show the world what was being done there and hoped I would be seen as a hero. It worked out differently. But I have not turned to violence. I don’t want to kill people. That is why I fled Iraq. I did not want to join the army.’
