VVD and CDA prepared to consider new Afghan mission
The VVD Liberals and Christian Democrats are prepared to consider joining a military training mission in Afghanistan, the NRC said on Friday, quoting sources close to the coalition formation talks.
The paper says a commitment to look into the mission will be included in a coalition agreement currently being worked out between the two parties. The anti-Islam PVV, which will support the government on matters of economic policy, will be able to vote against it.
That will mean a major test for the new cabinet because it will have to look for other party support to pass the measure. Although other parties do back continued involvement in Nato efforts to rebuild Afghanistan, they may see a vote as an opportunity to bring down the right-wing minority government.
On Thursday, the NRC said US military officials had again asked the Netherlands to join a military training mission.
