Supermarket withdraws stickers after Christian protests
The C1000 supermarket in Veenendaal has decided not to hand out stickers featuring supernatural characters called Dungans to shoppers with children following protests from Christian groups, news agency ANP reports on Tuesday.
C1000 launched the Dungans campaign, inspired by the tv series Avatar, on September 13. Shoppers are given a sticker for every €10 they spend, which can be collected in a special album.
‘We became aware that Dungans are not considered responsible toys. Christians in particular have problems with them. We share their concerns and have exercised our responsibility,’ the Veenendaal owner Kees Huibers told trade magazine Distrifood.
According to the Reformatorisch Dagblad, two other supermarkets have also banned the Dungans campaign.
