Iran says Dutch officials may not visit Zahra Bahrami
Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is refusing to recognise that a Dutch Iranian woman in jail in Tehran has Dutch nationality, Nos tv reported at the weekend.
Zahra Bahrami was arrested last December and is accused of taking part in an anti-government demonstration.
Asked by a reporter if a representative of the Dutch government could visit her, Ahmadinejad said: ‘That is not possible. Iran does not recognise dual nationality. You are Iranian or Dutch.’
Human rights groups say Bahrami has been held in solitary confinement and tortured and may face the death penalty.
A spokesman for the Dutch foreign ministry said officials would continue to press to be allowed to visit her and ensure she gets a fair trial.
