Eurlings to leave politics to ‘have a family’

Transport minister Camiel Eurlings is to leave politics after the next general election in order to focus on his family.

‘Over the coming period, the empahsis will be more on my private life. This is a choice I have made together with my girlfriend and a choice I am fully committed to,’ Eurlings said in a statement.
Eurlings, 36, is regarded in many Christian Democratic circles as the successor to party leader and prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende.
The Telegraaf reported on Thursday morning that he was being given second place on the party’s election list so he could step smoothly into Balkenende’s shoes if the June 9 election is a disaster for the CDA.
Balkenende said he regarded it as ‘unbelievably regrettable,’ that Eurlings is to leave active politics but that he ‘respected and valued’ his decision.
As minister, Eurlings is best known for his efforts to introduce a kilometer tax on motoring.
