A Rembrandt painting which has not been seen in public for nearly 40 years sold at auction in London for a record €22.3m on Tuesday evening.

‘Portrait of a man, half-length, with his arms akimbo’ was painted shortly after Rembrandt was declared bankrupt and began a new series of portraits.
Rembrandt expert Ernst van de Wetering told the Financial Times the painting is one of the Dutch artist’s masterpieces and shows ‘a remarkably intelligent and sensitive dealing with delicate light effects and the dosage of the the light’.
The previous record auction price for the artist was set in 2000 when ‘Portrait of a Lady aged 62’ sold for nearly €22m.
