Amsterdam city council and the national government have cut funding to the As Siddieq Islamic school group because it has ‘failed to meet agreements on citizenship and social integration’.

The primary school came under fire again earlier this month when a former teacher wrote to the Parool newspaper the official attitude to non-Muslims and saying children were being encouraged not to integrate. The school has three locations in the capital.
Earlier, the school authorities had promised inspectors they would ensure the school was ‘open to society’ and gave priority to ‘fundamental democratic values’. But it had failed to do this, junior education minister Sharon Dijksma is quoted as saying in Thursday’s Parool.
The school’s budget is to be cut pending a further report in March 2010, the minister said.
Earlier in the day, the city executive in charge of education said he no longer had confidence in the school’s board and was stopping subsidies.
