Benefits account for 27% of GDP
Social security benefits, pensions and financial support for the long-term sick accounted for 27% of the country’s total production in 2008, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.
In total, jobless benefits, child and sickness benefits cost the state €159bn. Sickness benefits accounted for 33% of the total.
The total benefits bill rose 4% compared with 2007.
