‘Mosquito’ given go ahead

Home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst is to allow local councils to decide for themselves if they want to make use of the Mosquito, a machine which emits an annoying sound only young people can hear.

The machine is used by 105 local authorities to discourage youngsters from hanging around on street corners.
In November, Ter Horst said use of the mosquito may be against the constitution and may have to be phased out.
Ter Horst does however have reservations. ‘Its use means no effort is made to make contact with loitering youngsters,’ she told the Volkskrant.
