Museum drops Piet march after threats
Eindhoven’s Van Abbemuseum has withdrawn its backing for a march protesting about Zwarte Piet – the black servant who accompanies St Nicholas (Santa Claus) – after threats from extreme right-wing groups.
The march was to have been held on Saturday as part of the Be(coming) Dutch exhibition which is currently on show at the gallery.
Artists Annette Krauss and Petra Bauer wanted to use the march to stimulate discussion on the institution of Zwarte Piet, which they describe as racist and colonialist. The character is usually played by a white man in black make-up.
