Terrorists such as Osama bin Laden should be tried at the International Criminal Court in The Hague if arrested, foreign affairs minister Maxime Verhagen said on Thursday.

Verhagen was speaking at a meeting to celebrate 10 years since the signing of the Statute of Rome, which led to the court’s creation. Before this can happen an internationally-acceptable definition of terrorism would have to be drawn up, Verhagen said.
The minister said he was concerned about the way terrorists are currently being brought to trial. ‘It is clear to me that we do not want to see situations where terrorists are detained, as happens at the moment in Guantánamo Bay,’ the Telegraaf reported Verhagen as saying.
Verhagen also called for more countries to ratify the treaty, which has now been signed by 106 nations. The US, China and India are not yet signatories, but Verhagen said he was hopeful the US would join up.
The court is now six years old and has achieved a great deal in that time, he said. ‘Six years is nothing more than a moment in world history,’ the Telegraaf reported him as saying.
