Motoring organisation ANWB has launched a strong attack on the government’s decision to go head with experiments on a kilometre tax system for car owners.

In a statement on Monday night, the organisation, which has four million members, said the decision was ‘incomprehensible’ and ‘impossible to explain’.
MPs gave the green light to the trials on Thursday, after transport minister Camiel Eurlings assured them motorists would not be worse off. The kilometre tax will replace the current flat fee road tax paid by all motorists, which raises some €1bn for the 12 provincial governments. The provinces are still in discussion with ministers about how to replace that money.
ANWB chairman Guido van Woerkom said MPs ‘did not properly understand what has happened’. Public support for the kilometre tax is under considerable pressure, Van Woerkom said.
