Lightning strikes a lot

The 24 hours up to Monday at midnight witnessed 49,000 lightning strikes, an extremely high number but not a record, the KNMI weather bureau said on Tuesday.

The record dates from July 2004 when lightning struck over 80,000 times. A number of homes in Limburg were left without power for a time during the storm, which was heaviest in the south of the country.
