Diplomat at centre of adoption row

The Dutch deputy consul in Hong Kong is at the centre of a major row after it emerged he and his wife have handed their adopted South Korean daughter over to the Chinese authorities because of what the Chinese papers say are ‘cultural problems’.

The girl, adopted when she was four months old, has been with the family for seven years. ‘This has been a very traumatic experience,’ the diplomat, who has not been named, told an international news agency.
The child, who reportedly speaks English and Cantonese, still has South Korean nationality.
