Dutch ducklings in bird flu probe

Imported day-old ducklings from the Netherlands are being investigated as a possible route for bird flu arriving at a farm in the south of Britain, the Times newspaper reports on Thursday.

The paper says Gressingham Foods, where the H5N1 virus has been identified, received regular supplies of duckings from a Dutch exporter. The focus is on the vehicle and the driver and links with previous outbreaks, the paper says.
The strain of the virus found in Suffolk is almost the same as one which infected ducks on a farm near Munich in September and the Czech Republic in August.
Meanwhile, the Dutch farm ministry reports that only one consignment of ducklings has recently be sent to the UK, and its delivery was made 50 km away from the infected farm.
