Holleeder witness died of drugs overdose
Bram Zeegers, a key witness in the trial of suspected crime boss Willem Holleeder, died from an overdose of the drug ecstacy, police said on Thursday.
According to police investigations, the sudden death of the 58-year-old former lawyer on Tuesday is not linked to the trial.
According to today’s Volkskrant, the ecstacy found in Zeegers’ body was 97% pure MDMA (the chemical substance used to make ecstacy) – an extremely high percentage. Three men have been arrested in connection with the production of the drug, the paper said.
The chance of dying from an MDMA overdose is around one in 100,000, said Peter van Dijk of the addiction centre Trimbos Institutute in a radio interview with public broadcaster Radio 1 this morning.
A decision on whether a Brazilian woman arrested at Zeegers’ home on Tuesday will remain in custody is expected later today, the Volkskrant reports. The woman, Zeegers’ girlfriend, ordered the drugs that proved fatal, the paper says, quoting police information.
According to Vrij Nederland, the woman’s mobile phone was tapped by police investigating the Holleeder case in 2005 and 2006.
