The huge transport sector in the Netherlands is benefiting from global economic growth but performance in various sectors differs widely, according to a report by ABN Amro presented on Thursday.

Road haulage firms are booking larger orders and increasing turnover, but the inland waterway shipping sector is falling back, the report said. Road hauliers booked 2.8% higher turnover and a 2.5% increase in volume in 2016.

The bank said the growing Dutch economy, sharply higher growth in the construction sector and the steady gain in online purchases of consumer goods which are delivered to buyers were the main reasons for the buoyancy in the trucking sector.

On the downside this trend is resulting in the increasing number of tailbacks on the roads. Road users lobby groups estimated the cost at €1.1bn in 2015, the report said.

The picture is different in the inland waterway shipping sector. Cargo volumes increased in 2016, but turnover fell back in 2016 due to low water levels in the rivers and higher cargo rates due to limited capacity. ABN Amro is forecasting a slight increase in volume for this year and next.

The volume of rail transport edged up by 0.8% in 2016, benefiting from more activity in the building and chemical sectors. The costly Betuwe all-freight rail connection between Rotterdam and Germany’s Ruhr industrial region also boosted volumes.
