Dutch skaters won three out of four gold medals on the second day of the world speed skating championships in South Korea on Friday.

The men and the women’s team pursuit squads both successfully defended their titles, while Jan Smeekens was the surprise gold medalist in the men’s 500 metres in a time of 34.58.

Ireen Wüst picked up her second gold of the championships in the team event, alongside Antoinette de Jong and Marrit Leenstra. Japan were second and South Korea third.

In the men’s race, Jan Blokhuijsen, Jorrit Bergsma and Douwe de Vries had a messy race but still did enough to hold onto the gold medal position. New Zealand were second and Norway took the bronze medal.

The Dutch men’s pursuit team have won the world title nine times including the last five years in a row.
