A2 is the most lucrative motorway
The A2 between Amsterdam and Utrecht is the most lucrative motorway in the Netherlands, bringing in €48m in speeding fines for the treasury in 2014.
The speed cameras along the A2 at Vinkeveen, Baambrugge and Breukelen accounted for 31% of all speeding fines last year, the Volkskrant reports.
The figures, obtained under the freedom of information law, show 989,000 motorists were fined for speeding along this stretch.
Careful
When the cameras were installed three years ago, a spokesman for the justice ministry told the paper: ‘Once the cameras have been in operation for a while, motorists will drive more carefully.’
Motoring organisation ANWB says it receives a lot of complaints about this stretch of road with motorists finding the speed limits confusing.
For instance, between Maarssen and Vinkeveen the daytime limit is 100kph but in the evening it rises to 130kph. However, just seven kilometres further at the Vinkeveen turnoff the limit is 100kph.
