Man dies after eating death cap mushroom
A 61-year-old man from Heerlen has died after eating deadly death cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides).
Because the symptoms of death cap poisoning are common – sickness and diarrhea – and do not materialise until up to three days after ingestion, the man did not report to the hospital in time to be treated. The poison eventually causes liver failure.
The national food centre warned last month about the risk of eating wild mushrooms.
