Ferry service to Norway leaves for Germany after Eemshaven port problems
The direct ferry route between Eemshaven and Norway will end this summer because of uncertainty about the availability of docking facilities at the Groningen port.
Instead, the ferry service will shift to Cuxhaven in Germany, some 220 kilometres away, adding two hours to the journey from Amsterdam.
Shipping firm Holland Norway Lines (HNL) launched the service to Kristiansand last year to some success but in recent months has been forced to cancel several crossings because of the lack of space in Eemshaven.
Groningen Seaports, which runs the Eemshaven operation, told local broadcaster RTV Noord it was sorry the company was leaving.
‘But we made it clear from the start they would have to sort out their own, suitable mooring facilities,’ spokesman Tim Lambeck said. ‘And as far as we are concerned, that is still an option.’
