Amsterdam takes in Roman rubbish to burn at AEB plant
Amsterdam waste disposal company AEB is going to process some 800,000 kilos of household waste from Rome on a weekly basis, the council-owned company has confirmed, following a report in the AD.
‘The waste will be put on the train in Rome in bales and go straight to the AEB incinerator,’ a AEB spokesman said. The heat generated by the incinerator is used for district heating schemes.
’This will benefit the environment more than to leave it in a landfill in Rome, even taking the transport into account,’ the spokesman said.
The AEB, located in the western harbour, has been processing waste from Britain for 10 years, and also has deals with Belgium, Germany, Iceland and France, the company told Dutch News.
A spokesman for the city council told local broadcaster AT5 that the city’s executive board had given the green light to the Roman deal.
Rome is struggling to cope with its waste because of a lack of waste disposal plants and a fire at a major incinerator last year, resulting in waste piling up in the Italian capital’s streets. According to Italian media, the AEB will be paid €180,000 per weekly load until the city builds a new incinerator, which may take as long as three years.
Amsterdam city council is sole owner of AEB but has been looking to sell. Rotterdam waste processing company AVR is a potential candidate, subject to conditions set by consumers and markets authority ACM.
