20% more girls opt for a career in a technical profession
The number of girls opting for a career in a technical profession at Vmbo vocational schools has jumped by 21% compared to last year, but they still only account for under 6% of the student body, industry body Techniek Nederland has said.
‘Opting for technical training has become almost as natural as choosing a career in care, or teaching for girls. That is good news for employers in our sector but also for the girls themselves. The technical professions offer great career opportunities,’ spokesman Doekle Terpstra said.
Despite the fact that only 16% of women who opt for technical training at this level actually end up and remain in the sector, Terpstra said more girls across the educational board are interested in a career involving light engineering and technology because of its changing image.
‘There is a greater emphasis on creativity, team work and communicative skills. Heavy equipment is being replaced by smart technology. The installation industry alone needs some 40,000 extra professionals by 2025 to enable the energy transition so girls are more than welcome, not only as technicians but as designers, advisors and data analysts,’ he said.
Currently 5.8% of students opting to work in the installation sector are female, compared to 5% last year. ‘There is still much to be done. That is why we are organising a Girls’ Day on Thursday so companies can show students what they do in practice,’ Terpstra said.
