Dutchman jailed for 13 years for Amanda Todd sextortion case
Dutch national Aydin Coban has been jailed for 13 years for extortion and criminal harassment in the case of Canadian school girl Amanda Todd, who killed herself after being blackmailed by him over a nude photo.
Supreme court justice Martha Devlin said while she didn’t find Coban’s behaviour to be the ‘dominating factor’ in her suicide, she did find that he caused ‘profound harm’ that contributed to her mental health issues, depression and substance use.
‘Ruining Amanda’s life was Mr. Coban’s expressly stated goal and was, sadly, one that he achieved,’ CBC quoted the judge as saying.
Coban, who was found guilty in August, was extradited to Canada in December 2000 to face the charges after a lengthy legal battle.
Amanda Todd killed herself in October 2012 shortly after posting a video online in which she used flash cards to describe how she sank into depression after being exploited.
Coban, who comes from Tilburg, was arrested later in the Netherlands. He was found to have dozens of aliases and to be blackmailing a number of girls after getting them to send him nude photographs.
In April 2017 he was jailed for nearly 11 years for the online abuse and for blackmailing 34 girls under the age of 18 – a sentence upheld on appeal at the end of 2018. Canada, however, wanted to try Coban for threats, abuse and blackmail through its own judicial system.
Coban will now be returned to the Netherlands where he will continue serving his 2017 sentence for blackmail. When that sentence is completed in 2014, the 13-year term for his role in Amanda Todd’s death will kick in.
