The Dutch government has made an order for 2,000 pre-fabricated homes – but doesn’t yet have anywhere to put them, according to the Volkskrant.

Housing minister Hugo de Jonge hopes that a bulk order will reduce individual housing costs and do more to alleviate the crisis of a shortage of housing and the mismatch between salaries and prices.

‘We hope that this order will primarily get houses rolling out of the factory floor faster,’ a housing spokesman told the Volkskrant.

Local municipalities and housing corporations will be able to sign up for the reduced-price housing.

However, Aedes housing corporation told the Volkskrant that it will be difficult to find the right location, partly due to a shortly of land and planning complaints from neighbours in proposed areas.

Earlier this year, De Jonge said that local house building targets should become obligatory.
