Icelandic carrier Icelandair is sending its own baggage handlers on flights to Schiphol, hoping to prevent passengers’ suitcases becoming part of the airport’s growing baggage pile-up.

Two baggage handlers will be on hand for every flight Icelandair operates between Keflavik International Airport and Schiphol this week, and next week if necessary.

A spokesman told Icelandic news platform RUV it would do ‘anything to prevent delays.’ Reportedly, cabin staff working for the airline have also pitched in on occasion.

Schiphol has been facing chaos at the baggage belts for weeks. Some 16,000 pieces of luggage are waiting to be collected or sent on. The lack of baggage handlers means some people have travelled to their holiday destinations without their luggage. Meanwhile, reports at Schiphol suggest their items have been gathering in big piles and spillling over on to the pavement outside.
