Company car drivers will only be able to choose between electric vehicles from 2025, if plans by junior transport minister Vivianne Heijnen become a reality.

The Telegraaf reports on Wednesday that Heijnen is working on plans to make sure more company cars are powered by electricity than petrol, and restrictions on choice are part of the proposal.

The minister believes the measure is needed to reach carbon reduction targets and will also help cut nitrogen-based pollution, sources told the paper.

By the beginning of last year year, there were 273,000 electric cars on the Dutch roads but they still account for just 3% of the total Dutch fleet.

Almost two thirds of them are company cars but more private owners bought a fully electric car last year, thanks to additional government subsidies.
