Ajax fans celebrate 36th league win, as Alfred Schreuder ‘nears’ head coach deal
Despite the rain, Ajax fans celebrated the club’s 36th league title all over Amsterdam on Wednesday night, in what police say was a ‘celebratory and manageable’ evening.
In total, 51 people were arrested overnight, as ‘we are the champions’ sounded from cafes and bars throughout the capital, following the 5-0 win over Heerenveen.
The Leidseplein was home to a spontaneous party, while the official celebrations took place in the Johan Cruijff stadium on the edge of the city. Thousands of fans who did not have tickets for the game gathered outside the stadium, setting off fireworks and singing.
Most of the arrests were made for public order offences and the possession of fireworks, and just a few people were held in the cells overnight, the police said.
Difficult three months
Club director Edwin van der Sar told the AD in an interview that the last three months had been difficult for the club and that the departure of football affairs chief Marc Overmars following sexual harassment claims had been particularly hard.
He also told the paper that he hoped there would soon be clarity about the replacement for coach Erik ten Hag who is moving to Manchester United.
