Part of an apartment block in Bilthoven has collapsed following a gas explosion, injuring four firemen.

The fire brigade were at the scene following reports of a gas leak while work was being carried out on the drains.

Eight apartments had been evacuated when an initial small explosion took place. A second explosion, a short while later, led to the building’s collapse. At least one fireman was buried in the rubble but was rescued and taken to hospital where his condition is said to be good, given the circumstances.

Engineers are now trying to stabilise the building to prevent any further collapse. The entire complex has also been evacuated.

Earlier this month, three people were pulled from the rubble of a house in the town of Oldenzaal in Twente which also collapsed following a gas explosion.

In that case, an engineer was installing a charging station next to the house and it is thought he may have hit a gas main while working.
