MPs have voted on plans to set tighter limits on political donations, including a €100,000 ceiling on gifts from private individuals.

MPs have also voted to publish the names of all donors giving over €1,000 to a party, slashing the current limit of €4,500, and again backed bringing in a ban on foreign donations altogether.

Far right parties PVV and FvD, as well as the ruling VVD and D66, have all had sizeable donations from abroad in recent years.

The proposal to set a maximum limit on donations was drawn up by independent MP Pieter Omtzigt and the SP’s Renske Leijten. They say the size of some donations is damaging the political system and giving rise to potential conflicts of interest.

Dutch political parties in parliament are largely supported by the taxpayer, based on their membership and number of MPs.

The new rules will not be implemented until draft legislation has been drawn up and passed by both houses of parliament.
