Amsterdam Museum quietly opens doors at Hermitage
The opening of the temporary home of the Amsterdam Museum at the Hermitage has gone ahead on Wednesday after all – but without the fanfare.
The war in Ukraine and the ‘vague’ stance of the Hermitage on the conflict were cited as the reasons to cancel the festivities last week.
The Hermitage has since severed all ties with its sister museum in St Petersburg, a decision which will impact heavily on the museum which has no collection of its own and gets no structural financial support.
‘It has all been settled in good harmony,’ an Amsterdam Museum spokesman said in a statement.
The Amsterdam Museum is to occupy a special wing until 2025 as renovations at its old location in the Burgerweeshuis in Kalverstraat take place.
